The city of Charleston, South Carolina issued the following press release:
The City of Charleston Fire Department received a copy of the final NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) report related to the death of nine firefighters at the Sofa Super Store fire on June 18, 2007 today. In accordance with the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, the NIOSH Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program (FFFIPP) routinely conducts investigations of firefighter line-of-duty deaths to formulate recommendations for the purpose of preventing future deaths and injuries. The program does not seek to place fault or blame on fire departments or individual firefighters, but to learn from these tragic events and prevent future related incidents.
The Fire Chief will discuss this report Thursday afternoon.
