February 17th was the original deadline for all stations to make a switch to digital. News Channel 7 and its sister station WYCW, are making that switch at different times. Tuesday night at midnight, WYCW, Channel 62, will turn off its analog signal and go to digital only. That means when you wake up on the 18th, the channel will be digital. For viewers who need help getting ready for the transition, we will have a “helpline” effective 7 am on Wednesday 2/18. It will be manned all day.
You can call 1-888-777-7556.
If you get your tv signal from an antenna, in order to be ready for DTV, you will need to either buy a new tv with a digital tuner or sign up for cable or satellite or buy a DTV converter box. There is now more than $600 million in new funding for converter box coupons. If your coupon expired you ca apply for a new one but there is a backlog on those requests. You can buy a converter box out of your own pocket, but it will cost you around $60.
News Channel 7 Chief Engineer Ron Peeler says you will need a good antenna that brings in UHF and VHF channels. "Rabbit ears will do well if you're close to a transmitter. But if you're far away, if you're 30, 35, 40 and greater, you're gonna need an outdoor antenna. It just won't hold up. Windy weather, rain, those kind of atmospheric conditions are going to make this receiver not work well," said Peeler.
