VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (AP) - The launch of a global warming satellite has ended in failure.
Something went wrong with a rocket carrying the NASA global warming satellite shortly after launch this morning, putting it into the ocean near Antarctica.
The 986-pound satellite was supposed to be placed into an orbit some 400 miles high to track carbon dioxide emissions.
But minutes after blast-off, the fairing on the rocket failed to separate. The fairing is a clamshell cover protecting the satellite as it soars through the atmosphere.
The Taurus project manager for Orbital Sciences Corp., which built the rocket and satellite, says "we could not make orbit."
NASA says it will put together a team of experts to investigate.
