A release from the North Carolina governor’s office states Alan Thornburg was appointed to the 28th Judicial District Superior Court to take the place of retiring Judge Ronald Payne.
Thornburg is a former North Carolina Court of Appeals judge. He studied law at Wake Forest.

GOV. EASLEY APPOINTS THORNBURG TO BUNCOMBE COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT
RALEIGH –-Gov. Mike Easley today announced the appointment of Alan Z. Thornburg to the 28th Judicial District Superior Court bench in Buncombe County. Thornburg will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Ronald K. Payne.
“Alan Thornburg’s wealth of experience as a private practitioner and judge on the North Carolina Court of Appeals has prepared him well for this role,” Easley said. “He will be a fine addition to the Superior Court bench.”
Thornburg is currently a senior policy fellow at Western Carolina University and serves on the North Carolina Board of Transportation. He was previously a judge on the North Carolina Court of Appeals and prior to that was a member of the law firm of Patla, Straus, Robinson & Moore in Asheville. He also served as a legislative aide to the late U.S. Sen. Terry Sanford and a law clerk to the late Sam J. Ervin III, 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Thornburg is a member of the 28th Judicial District Bar and the North Carolina Bar Association.
Thornburg graduated from Davidson College in 1989 with a degree in history. He received his law degree from Wake Forest University School of Law in 1996.
