Sid Gaulden, of the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, says a trooper pulled over a Dodge Magnum with three men inside on I-85 Thursday morning, but when the trooper approached the car, the vehicle took off, starting a chase. Speeds reached 100mph during the pursuit, troopers told us. Gaulden says the car took a U-turn, went back down northbound I-85 and got off on Laurens Road, proceeding south toward Mauldin.
In Mauldin the driver lost control of the car, troopers say, and slid into a wooded area, hitting an air conditioning unit at Mauldin Heights Apartments. Then two of the men fled, leaving the third – who hasn’t been identified by law enforcement – to be arrested. Through the day Thursday, officers searched the area for the two men, leading to a lockdown at J.L. Mann High School which was lifted just before 2pm. Greenville deputies brought in their K-9 team to help troopers and Mauldin police with the search.
Then late Thursday afternoon, the lat two men were aprrehended near Mauldin. 19-year-old Lamar Lee of Yorktown, VA and 22-year-old Shawn Lucas of Hampton, VA. Lee is being charged with Failure to stop for a blue light, possession of a stolen firearm, and felon in possession of a firearm. In addition, he is also wanted for an armed carjacking back in VA. Lucas is charged with possession of stolen firearm and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
The 3rd suspect, caught earlier Thursday, was treated at the hospital, but they decided not to press charges against him. He did not flee, and as Gauldin put it, was simply “in the car.”
