Witnesses watched in horror Thursday night as truck exploded into flames at an upstate gas station, while a man was pumping gas. An expert on gas pump fires tells us an explosion like this could happen to anyone. Join Amy Wood for a live blog Friday at 6:30pm.
A driver, and several witnesses, were all uninjured Thursday, after a fiery explosion at a Duncan gas station. It all happened at the BP station off Highway 290 in Duncan around 7:00. Witnesses like Paul Davis watched in horror. "I seen it go womp!," Davis says. The veteran tank driver was dropping off gas, when he looked outside the store and saw the flames. "I was standing there talking to her about the fuel, and all of a sudden boom!" Davis says the man driving the truck was pumping gas, got inside the truck, and when he got back out, it exploded in flames. "I seen the truck burning," says Davis. "I said oh Lord, there's a fire there! And I seen guys running from the truck."
Quick thinking, Davis dashed outside, getting others to safety and calling for help. "The water hose wasn't long enough so I called 911." Then, he rushed to get his own tanker away from the flames. "It was so crazy, I just ran and got my truck." After years putting gas in the ground, seeing it come back up is something he won't soon forget. "It scared me to death. Scared the devil out of me."
Luckily, the driver of the truck was not injured. There's no word on what caused the explosion.
