The Gate Cottage at Toccoa Falls College in Toccoa, Georgia burned down around 2:30 a.m. Monday, according to the school's office of the president. Dr. W. Wayne Gardner says they are shocked and saddened at the loss of the historic building.
All classes are cancelled and employees are asked to stay off campus Monday at request of the fire department. The school is waiting for the cause of the fire to be determined. On Tuesday, students and staff return to campus with classes relocated.
The college's website says that there was a fire in 1939 which destroyed the building and was rebuilt the same year and the president's office says that the building also withstood a flood in 1977. The building houses the school of counseling, Gate Cottage Restaurant and Falls gift shop.
During World War II many women were trained at Gate Cottage as secretaries and later were hired by the government.
