WASHINGTON (AP) - Senate Democrats are pushing ahead with plans for a quick confirmation hearing for President-elect Barack Obama's nominee for treasury secretary, despite revelations that he failed to pay $34,000 in taxes.
They're hoping to get Timothy Geitner approved on Inauguration Day, but Republicans so far haven't signed off on an expedited hearing.
Sen. John Kerry calls the tax issue an obvious "embarrassment." But the Massachusetts Democrat tells NBC's "Today" show that he believes it was "an honest mistake" and it shouldn't prevent Geithner from being confirmed.
But the senior Republican on the Senate Finance Committee says he hasn't decided whether Geithner should be disqualified. Sen. Charles Grassley pressed for the tax matter to be made public, and his spokeswoman says the senator considers the disclosure "serious."
