Deputies are calling it a tragic accident. And as a result, a six year old girl is dead.
They say the young child was shot and killed, after a gun, held by the girl's uncle went off inside a home.
It happened Friday on Johnson Lake Road in the Whitestone community. That's near Pacolet.
Six year old Madison Lawrence of Woodruff was visiting her uncle at his home.
As the uncle was unloading his handgun inside, deputies say it accidentally went off, shooting Madison in the face.
Major Dan Johnson with the Spartanburg County Sheriffs Office said, "the tragedy of the whole thing is, he knew the child was coming to the residence, and was in the process of rendering the weapon safe."
The girl died at the hospital.
No charges have been filed as of yet against the uncle.
