Greenville School officials, facing some of the biggest budget cuts in years, say they’ll be reducing their work force next year, but emphasize they will continue to “protect instruction and schools.”
Officials with the system say they’ve been working for the last year and a half to deal with the cuts. Measures taken include: Hiring freezes and cutting operational expenses.
Oby Lyles, district spokesperson, issued the following statement about the measures the district has taken:
We began preparing 18 months ago for State budget cuts, including freezing all hiring except for teachers and a few essential positions, and cutting operating expenses. Because of those actions, we believe we can continue this year to protect instruction and schools. However, next year, unless the state and/or federal government provides relief, we believe, most if not all of these cuts will carry forward, requiring us to cut support programs. If that takes place, our goal will be to place personnel in other positions, which are vacant due to attrition.
