Greenville County dispatchers say a trooper was involved in an accident Thursday afternoon at Wade Hampton Boulevard and Highway 14 in Greer. Originally it was reported as a deputy involved in the crash. Greenvill County officials verified the information later.
Greenville County officials say a trooper on a motorcyle was chasing a suspect on a motorcycle leading to the crash.
Kathy Hiles, with the Highway Patrol, says the suspect wrecked, but the trooper did not.
From Sid Gaulden with S.C. Public Safety says the wreck happened around 1:30 on Wade Hampton Blvd. at Highway 14. A highway patrol trooper on a motorcycle pulled into a nearby convenience store and noticed another motorcycle with a man and woman on it and thought the motorcycle matched the description of one wanted for other charges.
Gaulden says the motorcycle, driven by 20-year old Richard Vaughn of Greer, then left the convenience store at a high rate of speed and the officer chased him to the intersection of Wade Hampton Blvd. and Highway 14. Gaulden tells us Vaughn lost control of his motorcycle as he attempted to make a left turn onto Highway 14 and he sat it down in the middle of the intersection.
Vaughn and his passenger, an 18-year old unidentified female, were injured as a result and transported to Greenville Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Vaughn has been charged with reckless driving, failure to stop for a blue light and driving under suspension. He could face additional charges.
A News Channel 7 reporter on the scene says the road is open, but the wreck and subsequent cleanup lead to traffic being backed up on Highway 29.
Hiles says the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office will investigate the accident.
