WASHINGTON (AP) - Ken Blackwell is abandoning his bid for Republican Party chairman.
The former Ohio secretary of state also threw his "fullest support" behind rival Michael Steele. He's the former Maryland lieutenant governor who has momentum heading into the fifth round of balloting.
The announcement elicited a huge cheer in the hotel ballroom from Steele supporters.
Blackwell made the move after failing to get a majority of Republican National Committee members' votes after four rounds of balloting.
Three candidates are left.
