Unclaimed property, in general, is any financial asset that has not been claimed by its owner or has not had any owner-generated activity for a period of time...usually five years.
This would include savings and checking accounts, stocks and bonds, insurance proceeds, uncashed payroll checks, old utility deposits, and more. Any funds that the State is holding may be claimed by the rightful owner, or their heirs and there is no time limitation.
Anyone interested in checking to see if the State is holding unclaimed property for them may log on to the Treasurer's website at www.treasurer.sc.gov.
The State Treasurer's Office does not charge a fee for a person to recover their unclaimed property and warns South Carolinians to beware of any company that may ask for a fee or percentage of what it recovers.
