Cherokee County Sheriff Bill Blanton says that a chase Thursday night down Highway 11 that ended with a woman killing herself was not related to the recent homicides in Cherokee County or the fatal shooting at a store in Gaffney Thursday night.
Blanton tells News Channel 7's Melissa Keeney that the chase was a "bizarre coincidence." According to Blanton, the chase began on a Frontage Road near Interstate 85 and Highway 11 in Cherokee County as officers initiated attempted to initiate a traffic stop on the vehicle.
That's when Blanton says the woman let two teenage occupants out of the car and led Cherokee County Sheriff's deputies on a high speed chase down Highway 11 that ended when she crashed the vehicle at Cherokee Memorial Highway. Blanton says that officers pursuing the woman believe that shots were fired at them and saw smoke coming from the side door.
After the crash, Blanton says that the woman shot herself and was not related to the recent rash of homicides in the county.
Thus far, the name of the victim has not been released.
