The South Carolina Highway Patrol made a total of 342 DUI arrests across the state during the July 4th holiday weekend.
That's an increase of 36.8% over the 250 impaired driving arrests made a year earlier. A total of 54 of those arrests were made by the newly formed DUI Team.
The official weekend lasted from Thursday July 1 at 6:00pm until midnight Sunday, July 5.
Troopers also announce and increase for seat belt violations from 3,453 during the holiday in 2008 to 4,687 this year.
However, the number of holiday weekend fatalities also went up to 11 in 2009 after there were seven deaths last July.
For the year, there have been a total of 448 traffic fatalities through July 7. There were 495 deaths on the roads at the same point of 2008.
Greenville County has the largest number of traffic deaths with 30 fatalities among the 46 counties in South Carolina.
