Some students are still upset over a high school graduation that took place in Spartanburg District 6 on June the 2nd.
They are passing a petition around asking that all religions be respected at Dorman High School graduations. This is in reaction to a Christian invocation they say offended them.
We teamed up with our coverage partners at the Herald Journal for the details.
Brandon David is Unitarian Universalist and Hirak Pati is Hindu. They say the student chaplain at graduation said a solid foundation comes with Jesus Christ.
They feel the chaplain should have talked to all religions.
Fellow 2009 Dorman Grad Rachel Neely, who is Christian, says she didn’t feel the speaker intentionally offend anyone.
District 6 officials wouldn’t speak on camera but did release this statement: "Historically, an invocation has always been a part of Dorman High School's graduation, led by the student body chaplain, who is elected by popular vote. This process is strongly supported by District Six administration and school board policy. We have been made aware of the petition and will listen to any concerns a student may have."
Brandon and Hirak are nearing in on 100 signatures on their petition and once they hit that number they want to bring their concerns to the school.
News Channel 7 tried to get a hold of the student who gave the invocation but the phone call was not immediately returned.
We should note the school policy states the graduation speakers are allowed to give a speech that is free of censorship from the school and the administration. So the student who gave the speech did not violate any rules. She was free to say whatever she wanted as long as it wasn't vulgar.
We're also told all the students who ran for the spot this year were Christians.
