http://honeybee.tamu.edu/Hundreds of thousands of bees cause a Seneca neighborhood to be put on lockdown.
A tree branch broke off crashing down on a yard along Fairplay Sreet Wednesday afternoon. The hollow branch was filled a 6 to 8 foot long honey bee hive.
When it hit the ground, the branch split open releasing an estimated 750-thousand bees. The swarm chased emergency officials back into their vehicles and had neighbors running for cover.
“I got stung; my friend Lee had bees in her hair. She came running back in the house and we were getting bees out of her hair,” says Cindy Eckel, the owner of the home where the branch fell.
Beekeeper Alan Boggs originally wanted to save the bees, however to protect the people of the neighborhood he had to spray and kill them. It was a decision he really didn’t want to make with the honey bee population declining.
Fortunately no one was seriously hurt.
