The Salvation Army in Greenville is asking for help Wednesday with supplies at their pantry running low. A record number of families are depending on the emergency food relief.

The Salvation Army reports food bags have been given to 4,541 Greenville residents so far this year. In all of 2008, a total of 3,976 Greenville residents got those food bags at their headquarters at 417 Rutherford Street.

"This is one of the toughest time I've encountered as an officer of The Salvation Army," said Major Bobby Lancaster, Area Coordinator for The Salvation Army in a written statement. More and more individuals from the community are arriving at the food distribution program run by The Salvation Army of Greenville declaring that they've finally reached the end of their savings. They need help."

The Salvation Army's food pantry is stocked with basic items such as canned meat, canned vegetables, canned fruit, powdered milk, rice, pasta, flour and sugar.

To donate to The Salvation Army, call 235-4803 extension 17 and speak with Pamela Garcia.
