Laurens County Sheriff Ricky Chastain says around 9:30 a.m. Friday they got a call that a 3 year-old shot a 4 year-old at a home on Rolling Meadows Road in Gray Court.
Sheriff Chastain says a man and the two children spent the night at the home because of an event that happened the night before. The 3 year old got up and found a .22 caliber handgun under the bed. Sheriff Chastain says the homeowner was not aware the gun was there.
Officials say it appears the 3 year old shot the 4 year old in the abdomen, while the father and 4 year old were sleeping in the bed.
The child was airlifted to Greenville Memorial and was alert and conscious. The sheriff says an investigator is at the hospital but did not know the condition of the child.
He said they are still gathering evidence in the case and wouldn’t comment on whether charges would be filed against the homeowner.
