COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Furman University professor Brent Nelsen says he's dropping his bid for governor, and plans to run for the Republican nomination for state education superintendent.
Nelsen told The Associated Press on Tuesday that his exploratory effort convinced him he's better suited to run for the state's top education position.
He becomes the only declared Republican for that race.
Education Superintendent Jim Rex has been considering a bid for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination.
Nelsen had only raised just over $24,000 for a gubernatorial campaign. Nelsen said he's enlisted U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint as his campaign chairman and expects to crank up fundraising.
