The Better Business Bureau is warning against scammers when trying to check out the new government "cash for clunkers" program. The scams ask for personal information including social security numbers in order to get a voucher, or to have their name added to an application list. Those vouchers don't exist. The program allows some old gas guzzlers to be traded in for a credit on a new, fuel-efficient vehicle. Dealers apply for the program and must be registered to participate. The dealer is the one who gets reimbursed, not the consumer.
Some tips from the Better Business Bureau:
Avoid Anyone who offers a money order, check or direct deposit for the rebate.
Discover the current value of the "clunker."
If it's more than $4,5000, selling the clunker or a normal trade-in may be a more cost-effective route.
The program only works for buying or leasing new vehicles from a dealership, not used vehicles.
