A mail van - stolen Monday from Clemson University - was found burning later that night in Oconee County.

Clemson University police chief Johnson Link said the van and its contents are a total loss. The Oconee County Sheriff¹s Office is investigating the arson.

The burning van was reported around 10:00pm Monday by a passerby on Woods Road near Seneca. It was taken from Sikes Hall around noon Monday.

Mail Services director Douglas Lofton reported the van was carrying mail bound for Kinard Hall, Martin Hall, Long Hall, President's House, Hendrix Student Center, Vickery Hall, Jordan Hall, Edwards Hall, Strode Tower, Fire Department, South Carolina Botanical Garden, Strom Thurmond Institute and the Madren Center.

The van also was carrying mail that had been picked up from Holtzendorff Hall, Mell Hall, Internal Auditing Office, Sears House, National Dropout Prevention Center, Clemson House, Environmental Health and Safety, Visitor's Center, Alumni Center, 110 Daniel Drive and 114 Daniel Drive.

Lofton recommended that those departments cancel outgoing checks that may have been in the van.

Clemson Police say anyone who sent mail to the university in the last week should check with the campus department to verify the letter or package arrived.

Anyone who may have information about the case should call the Oconee County Sheriff¹s Office at 638-4111 or the Clemson University Police Department at 656-2222.
