The City of Union has partnered with Carolina Community Action's Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program to help citizens stay cool this summer. Duke is also offering assistance to it's customers.
The program allows people to get up to $500 twice a year to help pay their electric bill.
To apply for assistance stop by Union City Hall with the following:
-Proof of legal resident of the United States
-Provide copies of the social security cards of all household members
-Provide a copy of a current utility bill
- Proof of total household income for the past 30 days
Mayor Herold Thompson is relieved for the assistance. "We see a lot of people that's having utility problems paying their bills," said Mayor Thompson. Union County currently has a whopping 20% unemployment rate.

Duke Energy also works with assistance agencies across the Carolinas and can refer customers to local programs that may be able to help them pay their power bills. Duke Energy and its customers support these programs. Call 1-800-943-6914.
Here are ways you can do to keep your home cool for less this summer:
-Close window coverings during the day
-Raise thermostat setting to 75 degrees
-Keep windows closed at night
-Keep attic ducts properly insulated
