Homeowner Wants DHEC and Jonesville to Stop Raw Sewage Spills in His Yard

Homeowner Wants DHEC and Jonesville to Stop Raw Sewage Spills in His Yard

When 7 On Your Side started asking questions about a family with a raw sewage problem outside of their home they started seeing results.

Joe Stepp points out dried up sewage that he says spills from this sewer every time there's a heavy downpour at his Jonesville home.

"You can smell it even now," said Stepp.

Stepp said the town of Jonesville and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control haven't done enough to help. He said over the last few years the drought has helped keep the problem under control, but recent rains have him concerned for the health of his family and others.

"It's disgusting and they won't do nothing about it," said Stepp.

One day after we sent his complaint to DHEC, the agency had staff at his home surveying the problem.

In a statement to us DHEC spokesperson Thom Berry said, "While we did not give the town a specific timeline to correct the issue, we will closely monitor their progress."

And so will 7 On Your Side.

We took his concerns to Councilman Steve Thompson who oversees any water issues in the town of Jonesville. When asked how he can help Thompson replied, "We've already cameraed the lines to try to pinpoint where the infiltration problem is coming from on this particular portion on the line."

Thompson says so far they haven't come up with any answers.

"I'm working on it, I'll get it solved at my earliest convenience," he said. "Just as soon as we can find a problem then we can start working on fixing it."

Until then Stepp says he'll be watching and waiting to make sure his problem gets solved.

If you see raw sewage on your street or property contact the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control at 803-898-DHEC (803-898-3432).
