From Haywood County Emergency Management
The eastbound lanes of I-40 in Haywood County are scheduled to reopen in a matter of minutes, according to Haywood County emergency management officials.
I-40 was closed in both directions earlier this morning due to a chemical leaking from an overturned tractor-trailer. Westbound lanes will remain closed from Mile Marker 20 to the Tennessee state line as a hazardous materials team continues to assess the chemical spill. However, the Haz-Mat Team has confirmed that the leaking chemical does not pose a danger to fire fighters or to the public, according to Greg Shuping, Haywood County Emergency Management Director.
Motorists traveling west on I-40 are being diverted to Interstate 26 West to Interstate 81 to I-40. For more information, motorists can dial *HP to access the Highway Patrol.
WAYNESVILLE, N.C. (AP) - A truck wreck near the North Carolina-Tennessee state line has closed Interstate 40 in both directions.
Officials say unspecified hazardous materials are involved.
The Department of Transportation said the mountain highway is expected to reopen sometime during the morning Wednesday. A tractor trailer wreck at the 4-mile marker resulted in the road being shut down for about 20 miles east of the Tennessee border.
Officials say drivers can get around the wreck by using Interstate 26 and I-81.
Haywood County spokesman David Teague said officials didn't yet know what materials were involved, but that a hazardous materials
crew was at the scene.
