ROME (AP) - At least 10 people have been killed and 50 injured
in a fire that erupted after a freight train derailed in the middle
of a small Italian town.
A rail car filled with liquefied natural gas exploded as the
rear of the train plowed into a residential neighborhood in the
Tuscan seaside town of Viareggio. The blast collapsed at least two
buildings and spread flames over a vast area.
Police say seven people including a child were killed in their
homes either by the fire or the collapsing buildings. Two other
people driving on the road that runs alongside the tracks were also
killed. A 10 victim died in the hospital.
Officials say it's been difficult to identify the bodies.
Some 35 of the 50 injured are hospitalized with severe burns.
The ANSA news agency is reporting that three children were pulled
alive from the rubble of a collapsed home shortly after dawn on
Tuesday.
