Doctors say former First Lady Barbara Bush is doing well after heart
surgery. She's already up and talking.
It took surgeons at Houston Hospital about two and half hours to replace her aortic valve yesterday.
The 83-year old wife of former President George H. W. Bush had been complaining
about shortness of breath last week.
that's when doctors discovered the valve had hardened.
Surgeons replaced Mrs. bush's valve with natural living tissue from an animal.
Left untreated, a hardened aortic valve can lead to a heart attack.
In November, Mrs. Bush underwent surgery for a perforated ulcer. Doctors say
the two are not related.
Mrs. Bush was last seen publicly six weeks ago with her husband and son, former
President George W. Bush at President Obama's inauguration.
At first the former first lady didn't want to tell her children about her
latest health problem ....because she didn't think it was a big deal.
She's expected to be in the hospital a week to ten days and doctors expect her
to fully recover and resume her active lifestyle.
