It's an historic day in California as the state's supreme court hears
arguments about same sex marriage. In November, California voters approved
Proposition 8 which defines "marriage" as only between a man and woman.
Now the court must decide whether to uphold it or take other action.
So many people came to today's hearing on same sex marriage, gay rights
groups set up a big screen in the courthouse plaza so everyone could watch.
The State Supreme Court is hearing arguments for and against Proposition 8.
The voter-approved initiative changes California's constitution to define
"marriage" as only between a man and woman.
Shannon Minter argues Prop. 8 is illegal.
Andrew Pugno argues that preventing same sex "marriage" is the will of the
people.
Proposition 8 trumps the historic decision last may by the state supreme court
which granted same sex couples the right to marry.
Some 18-thousand same sex couples have already been married across the state.
Legal analysts say a likely solution would be to keep those marriages
valid...while still upholding Prop. 8.
Another possible outcome is for the state to recognize civil unions for all
people gay or straight.. and leave the term "marriage" to the churches. Manuel
