Gresham Barrett Running for S.C. Governor

Barrett said he's running because "I believe South Carolina has tremendous potential, despite our serious challenges."

Third District U.S. Congressman Gresham Barrett made his bid for governor official.

In an email to supporters, Barrett said he will seek the office in 2010 - following the end of current Governor Mark Sanford's term - because "I believe South Carolina has tremendous potential, despite our serious challenges."

Barrett laid out his vision for South Carolina in the release:

- Make South Carolina a national model for job creation by incentivizing existing and new business to create thousands of high paying jobs.

- Reduce government spending by restructuring and eliminating wasteful spending.

- Reform health care with free market solutions

- Improve K-12 education.

- "Respect our culture, promote our families and protect life."

Furman University professor Brent Nelson announced last week that he will also seek the Republican nomination to run for governor in 2010. Lieutenant Governor Andre Bauer is also considering a run to replace Sanford.
