COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina's budget debate has resumed with a coastal legislator arguing that colleges should freeze tuition because they're getting federal stimulus help.
Republican Rep. Thad Viers of Myrtle Beach noted Tuesday the average in-state tuition is now nearly $6,600 yearly. Viers says colleges need to give parents and students a break.
It's the second day of House floor debate on a $6.6 billion state spending that includes $1 billion in federal stimulus money used to spare colleges, public schools, health care and state agencies from deep budget cuts.
Legislators also are expected to debate raising the state's cigarette tax and expanding Medicaid coverage before sending the bill to the Senate this week.
