The Timken Company has announced the layoffs of approximately 65 workers at the Tyger River plant on Friday.

The loss of jobs in Union County are due to economic conditions that are constraining demand according to Lorrie Paul Crum of The Timken Company.

The effective date for the layoffs is May 22, but callback rights will remain in place for two years for associates to return to work.

The plant is located at 408 Industrial Park Road in Union.

Union County has the highest unemployment rate in the Upstate. The jobless figure for March was 20% according to the South Carolina Employment Security commission.

The agency reported there were 2,461 unemployed workers in the county in the most recent report.
