Investigation Continues in Pedestrian Death

A pedestrian died after being hit by a S.C. Highway Patrol vehicle on Asheville Highway.

A state trooper hit and killed a pedestrian attempting to cross Asheville Highway Thursday evening. Department of Public Safety says the trooper involved was Cpl. J.N. Jones. The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office says Jones was not injured in the accident.

Accident Reconstruction Teams are investigating this accident, and a report on the incident could come this week.

News Channel 7 was first on the scene of the crash. which occurred in front of the O'Reilly's Auto Parts store at the intersection of Jeff Davis Street and Asheville Highway. The accident happened shortly before 9 that night.

The victim was transported to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, where he later died. That man has been identified as Jeremiah Edward Howell, 30, of Roebuck. His family declined to talk about the accident.

The portion of Asheville Highway where the accident occurred is not well lit, and investigators say that may have been one of the causes of the accident.

The part of Asheville Highway from Jeff Davis and Dexter to California Avenue was closed as the Highway Patrol accident investigation team and the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office investigated.

Early Friday morning the roadway reopened.
