The North Carolina Statehouse approved a ban on smoking at bars and restaurants Wednesday.
Gov. Beverly Perdue has 10 days to sign the ban into law or to veto.
The statehouse voted 62-56 in favor of the bill.
North Carolina is the largest tobacco producing state in the United States.
The legislation was backed by health advocates and opposed by lawmakers from areas where tobacco and cigarette factories are large employers.
