JOLIET, Ill. (AP) - Former Illinois police officer Drew Peterson
is pleading not guilty to charges of murdering his third wife.
Kathleen Savio was found dead in a dry bathtub five years ago
with a gash on the back of her head. Her death was originally ruled
an accident but was reclassified as a homicide after Peterson's
fourth wife disappeared.
Peterson denies any involvement in Savio's death or the
disappearance of Stacy Peterson. He was formally arraigned in a
Joliet, Illinois court Monday morning.
Peterson's attorney had planned to ask for Peterson's bail to be
reduced from $20 million to less than half a million at today's
hearing. But that was derailed when prosecutors asked that the
judge in the case be removed. Last November, the same judge
dismissed felony gun charges against Peterson.
A hearing on that issue is set for Thursday.
After Monday's arraignment, Savio's family members told reporters
outside the court that they do not want Peterson released on bail.
