Looking to save money on groceries? Who isn't, right? The average family spends $600 a month on groceries. You could cut that nearly in half by changing the way you shop.

You might think you're at Sotheby's. But you're not. This auction is for groceries. Everything from meats, to cheese, to juice, all about half price. Said Colonel Preston Bennet with the Rite Auction, "He picks up surplus items from restaurants. He picks up items that are surplus from the wholesale warehouses, maybe Sam's or Bj's."

When you come here, you don't need coupons, you just need a card with a number on it. Rick Hannon with Rich Foods showed us, "We have stuff like coffee. I can't say where it comes from. It's a major chain that sells coffee."

The Rite Auction in Union has gone from 60 shoppers to 150 every time. Said bidder Faye Smith, "I just sit here and let them bid and if I see something I want, I say hold your card up (to her husband) and we get it."

You don't have to buy bulk. The food is sold individually. If the bidding goes too high, they drop the price back down. Said Smith, "I save anywhere from $28 to $30 a week on my groceries."

And the bidders have a blast. Said bidder Don Albee, "You get to bid against the other people and see how it turns out."

If bidding is not your style, check out discount grocery stores, such as Aldi. Aldi's Kendra Shaw told us, "We can save you 25% to 40% on your groceries, depending on which competitor you shop." The foods come from the same manufacturers, just with different labels.

And here are some secrets to saving at the grocery store. Pick up the store flyer and plan your meals based on what's on sale, said Tod Marks with Consumer Reports, "which are sold at or below cost just to get you into the store, where hopefully you'll buy a few more profitable items."

Stock up on sale items.

And look high and low on the shelves for lower prices. Said Marks, "You put commodities there. Things that don't bring in a lot of profits that people are going to buy no matter what."

More tips: shop alone. You'll spend more if you're with your family! And do not shop when you're hungry. You'll buy food you don't really need.

Whether you're navigating the grocery store, or bidding for bargains, you can cut your grocery bill nearly in half.
