7th Circuit Solicitor Trey Gowdy says he is "seriously considering" running for U.S. Congress in 2010.
The top prosecutor for Spartanburg and Cherokee Counties would run against Republican Bob Inglis in the 4th Congressional District.
Gowdy says he has already discussed the matter with his family and will make a formal decision by June 1st.
"I am concerned about the direction in which this country and the Republican party are headed," said Gowdy.
"The fundamental core principals of the Republican party need to be identified and expressed in a positive and enthusiastic way, instead of continuing to be the faint echo of the Democratic party that it has become."
Gowdy says if he does decide to run, his campaign manager will be Dave Woodard, a political scientist from Clemson who has advised Gresham Barrett, Lindsey Graham, Jim DeMint and Inglis himself.
Woodard was managing the campaign of Andrew Smart, a Greenville businessman who is running against Inglis in 2010. But Gowdy says Woodard recently resigned from Smart's campaign.
Gowdy has served as 7th Circuit Solicitor since 2001. He is a former federal prosecutor and a graduate of the South Carolina School of Law.
