Investigators are trying to find out what sparked the flames at an old mill. Firefighters rushed out to the old Toxaway Mill at East Whitner and Gossett Streets in Anderson around 12:30 a.m. Monday morning. They found heavy black smoke coming from the building when they arrived. The Anderson County Fire Chief Billy tells News Channel 7 crews had to get through overgrown brush before they could get into the building. Chief Gibson says they did find some evidence of people who may had been sleeping in the mill building.
Gibson said the building needs to be secured, and the overgrown trees and bushes, cut back.
"The vegetation needs to be cut down and the building either restored or completely leveled," said Gibson. He said at this time, it's not clear who owns the site.
Anderson County firefighters left the scene of the fire Monday morning. The cause is under investigation.
