Spartanburg City Councilman Junie White easliy defeated Mike Fowler in the race for mayor Tuesday night, while Cate Brandt Ryba defeated her opponent to win the District 4 council race.
White, who garnered 87 percent of the votes, is the owner of White’s Pine Street Exxon and is wrapping up his first term on council representing District 4. He will take office in January.
In the lone opposed city council race, Cate Brandt Ryba defeated Thomas Belenchia to fill White's vacated District 4 seat. Ryba received 72 percent of the vote to Belenchia's 27 percent. Ryba works for the Mary Black Foundation and will take office in January.
In the two unopposed council races, Jerome Rice ran unopposed for the District 5 seat vacated by Rev. Kenneth Smith. Councilwoman Linda Dogan also ran unopposed.
City turnout was better than the overall county turnout, with almost 20% voting in the mayoral race and 35% in the District 4 race.
