There were plenty of races to chose from in both North and South Carolina, but not many voters turning out to vote in them in Tuesday's municipal elections. In Spartanburg County, there was a mayoral and city council race in Spartanburg, as well as countywide school board races and municipal elections in Central Pacolet, Landrum and Greer, but total voter turnout for the county was just under 9%. In Greenville County, voter turnout was in the single digits percentage-wise despite hotly contested races in Greenville, Greer, Travelers Rest, Mauldin, Fountain Inn and Simpsonville. In the town of Ninety Six, only 12 people voted for a town council seat; in Salem, only 68 people voted in the town's council race.
In North Carolina, Buncombe County voters came to the polls in larger numbers, mainly because of the Asheville mayoral and city council elections. Turnout for the county was just under 20%. In Henderson County, turnout was AT 14%.
Low voter turnout is typical for off-year elections, but many election commissioners were surprised by today's turnout.
