A fire rages through an Upstate man's home. He is woken up by his smoke detectors but he's trapped.
Scott Mathis of Cowpens says when he woke up in his Wallace Road home, the smoke overwhelmed him and couldn't go downstairs. He tried calling 911 but he couldn't talk because of the smoke. Fortunately he was able to make it to a second floor window and escape to the roof from where he jumped to safety.
Although Scott did the right thing with having working smoke detectors, the Goucher-White Plains fire chief stresses that people should also have a land line and not just rely on your cell phone. That way if you can't talk like Scott, dispatchers will have a better idea as to where you are.
The chief also says to make sure you have an escape route planned incase you find yourself trapped like Scott.
Most Upstate fire departments offer free smoke detectors and batteries to those that are in need.
