Some lined up over three hours early Saturday morning to wait in line to get some much needed food.
The Potters House church in Jonesville began a food bank last month and Saturday was their second give-a-way. The numbers of those needing help is growing.
From the beginning of the line, you couldn't see the end of it. Hundreds of people standing in the cold waiting for their chance to get food from The Potters House's second food bank. The number of people here almost doubled last month's total.
People like Mary Nolan.
“My husband and I need assistance,” she says.
The pair lives on a fixed income and only get a check from the government once a month.
“We have a mortgage, heat and so forth. By the time at the end of the month, your food… sometimes you just have to cut that amount in half,” says Mary.
Things get so bad, Mary says, they have to ration their food.
“Sometimes if we don't have much bread left, I’ll just give my husband, he has Parkinson’s and I think of him before myself and I see that he eats before me, or if it's a piece of bread we'll toast it and share it,” Mary says.
Thanks to the food give-a-way to the needy, Mary is hopeful this month will be different.
Probably the most impressive part about The Potters House food bank is that there's only about two dozen members of the church yet there were more volunteers than members of the church, and they're helping more than 600 people.
Pastor Donald Moore says at this point, he doesn't know when they will have another one of these food banks. They're hoping next month, but the availability of getting the food is difficult because of the increased need from all over the state.
Once they get a date, News Channel 7 will be sure to let you know.
