Flames are going through the roof of one of the buildings a the Hillcrests Apartments in Asheville.
The apartments are located at 100 Atkinson Street Building 21.
Interim Chief Scott Burnette of the Asheville Fire Department says the fire began at 11:23 a.m. and has affected a 6-unit apartment building. A maintenance worker has been transported to the hospital with apparently minor injuries. There have been no reports of persons unaccounted for.
The American Red Cross is assisting families who have been displaced by the fire.
Mayor Terry Bellamy visited the apartment fire location to witness what was being done to fight the fire, and what the city could further do to assist.
Asheville Police Department is also on site to help with traffic control.
Asheville Citizen-Times reports residents say they heard a large explosion.
