November 11, 2009 Pelham Elementary School, Greenville, South Carolina. Shea Miranda, retired Petty Officer 2d Class, United States Navy, spoke today at the 2nd and 4th grade classes at Pelham Elementary about the United States Military. Shea entertained Mrs. Jordan and Mrs. Sweatmans classes with stories about her experience in the military and spoke about serving as military police, arrests, patrols as well as navigating ships, including destroyer tenders and participating in open ocean navy cruises aboard the aircraft carrier USS Constellation (CV-64).
Shea was the first female Navy Military Police Officer at 32nd Street Navel Station (NAVSTA), San Diego in 1986. The Navy Military Police relieved the United States Marines at this Station where the marines were previously providing military police. Shea was trained as a Quartermaster. Quartermasters (QMs) stand watch as assistants to officers of the deck and the navigator; serve as helmsman and perform ship control, navigation and bridge watch duties. Shea received two honorable discharges and left the Navy in 1990.
After the military , Shea was employed for ten years as a casino dealer in Las Vegas and worked at such prestigious locations as Sams Town and the Paris. Presently, Shea is married with three children, is a licensed realtor and works at the Bermuda Triangle Scuba Shop. She is an avid scuba diver and has received diving certifications including Advanced Diver, Deep Diver, Night Diver, Underwater Navigation, Rescue Diver, Master Diver, Solo Diver and is presently a Dive Master candidate. She intends to continue her diving career and will be taking the necessary classes to become a Scuba Diving Instructor in 2010.
