The University of South Carolina is trying to break the Guiness World Record for the largest food drive by a non-charitable organization in a 24-hour period. The current record is 388,381 pounds.
The University of South Carolina’s “Beat Hunger” campaign will wrap-up with a pep rally Thursday afternoon in Columbia. . Throughout the event, members of the campus and Columbia community can bring canned goods for the final “stuffing” of the bus. At 1:15 p.m. there will be a brief program. Dennis Pruitt, vice president for student affairs, will speak and can discuss with media how the “Beat Hunger” campaign it is part of the university’s focus on health, wellness and community service. Michael Scheffres, director of Carolina Dining, also will speak and can discuss the success of Helping Hands through the dining facilities as part of “Beat Hunger.” Immediately following the pep rally, the bus will be taken to a location to be weighed in order to determine whether a new Guinness world record has been met. Once weighed, the bus and all the canned goods collected will head to Harvest Hope Food Bank .
