Fire continues to smolder at an Upstate Textile Plant Tuesday.
The Croft Fire Department along with 5 other departments responded to a large fire at the Martex Fibers plant at 2650 Southport Road just before 11 o'clock Monday night.
The Martex Plant makes cotton fibers used in the automobile industry.
Croft Fire Chief Lewis Hayes says the fire was difficult to reach because it started in the the back row of the bales of fiber that are stacked against the back wall.
No word on the official cause of the fire yet, but the fire chief says a fire wall prevented the whole plant from going up in flames.
In March 2008, another fire at Martex Fibers injured a Croft Fire captain.
The chief tells us, there have been may other fires at the plant over the years.
Chief Hayes says everytime his dept does the annual fire inspection at Martex, they find potential hazards that have to be corrected.
News Channel 7 has also found several OSHA violations over the last 10 years.
There are no reports of injuries.
Southport Road is closed down Tuesday afternoon.
Drivers should use an alternate route around the fire.
