In less than two weeks those driving in North Carolina will no longer be able to text while driving and South Carolina may be a step closer to doing that same thing.
A couple of bills pre-filed in the South Carolina State House aim to make driving safer when it comes to cell phones.
A bill authored by Rep. Don Bowen of Anderson and Oconee Counties would ban texting while driving. Another bill would force people who use cell phones while driving to use hands free devices.
A recent study by Virginia Tech shows that those just dialing their cell phone are 2.8 times more likely to be involved in an accident.
According to the Governors Highway Safety Association only six states and the District of Columbia have bans on using hand held cell phones. 19 states and the District of Columbia have banned texting while driving.
