There are more low-cost options now than ever when it comes to cell phone plans. It's all because so called “tier 2” providers have come on the market, companies with names like Boost Mobile and Straight Talk.
They're giving the big four, Verizon, Sprint, AT&T and T-Mobile, reason to sweat, especially when it comes to unlimited calling plans with no contract.
Here's a breakdown of what tier two providers in the upstate are offering:
With Virgin Mobile you can get unlimited calling with no contract for $50 a month.
Boost Mobile ups the ante, charging the same amount but throwing in unlimited texting and web.
Page Plus Cellular has unlimited talk and text and 20MB of data for $39.95
Wal-mart's Straight Talk offers two types of no contract plans:
1) 1,000 minutes and text messages plus 30MB of data for $30 a month
2) Unlimited calling, texting and web for $45
Now, before you go changing your plan, you may want to check the coverage area. Some of the lesser known carriers like boost mobile have less coverage when compared to the major carriers like Verizon."
The top reason people say they're sticking with their tier 1 plan, is what will likely keep the big providers in business.
“Everybody from my family in other states is on Verizon too and we have free access to them," said Melinda Wyatt, a Verizon customer.
The average U.S. adult spends $78 dollars on his or her cell phone bill to get 1,000 minutes a month.
And here's a sneaky tip: Some of those tier 2 carriers use the Verizon Network, like Page Plus Cellular and Straight Talk.
So you could go Verizon and pay $125 a month for unlimited calling and texting, or you could go with Straight Talk and get the same coverage and plan for $45.
