I-26 eastbound toward the town of Woodfin was closed for hours Friday night after a serious accident involving an 18-wheeler late Friday afternoon.
North Carolina Highway Patrol says the tractor trailer was headed eastbound on I-26 and blew a tire. It went about 25 feet down an embankment and onto Old Marshall Highway.
Crews from various fire departments and HazMat responded to the scene to contain a fuel spill. Rescuers were able to pull the driver to safety.
Old Marshall Highway was expected to remain shut down until at least midnight Friday night. The same for I 26 E.
Thousands of drivers were stranded and at a standstill for hours, trying to make their way through the Asheville area.
The name and condition of the driver has not been released.
