On Wednesday morning just before five o'clock a.m. a magistrate judge in Spartanburg denied bond for a man accused of leading officers on a chase and shooting at them.
The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office says around 10:40 a.m. Tuesday morning a Deputy on patrol on Hayne Street in the Una Community of Spartanburg County saw a blue Chevy Impala pull into a gas station and pull up to the gas pumps, but the driver did not get out to pump any gas into the vehicle he was driving.
The Deputy decided to check the vehicle’s license plate through and found that the vehicle had been reported stolen from Spartanburg County, SC but the registered owner resides at an address in Clinton which is in Laurens County, SC.
The Deputy attempted to stop the vehicle by and the driver refused to stop and drove away from the Deputy.
Deputies say the driver, 20 years old Travis Jones led the Deputy and other responding officers through the streets of the neighborhoods around Howard Street and Arch Streets inside the City of Spartanburg. Deputies say the chase reached speed of 40-50 miles per hour.
The Sheriff's Office says the chase went through the Asheville Highway and California Avenue areas, back inside the City of Spartanburg near Spartanburg Regional Medical Center and then back to the Howard Street and Arch Street area.
The suspect finally stopped his vehicle at the intersection of Brawley Street and Farley Street.
Deputies say the Jones began to run but not before pulling out a handgun and shooting at the Deputy in the patrol car closest to the vehicle he had been driving.
The Deputy returned fire but did not hit Jones who continued running away toward Arch Street.
Deputies say Jones ran into other responding officers and fired his gun yet again.
This time officers did not return fire out of concern for the safety of the people who had come outside their residences to see what was happening.
Deputies say Jones then dropped his weapon and arrested.
He was transported to a local hospital to be checked for any injuries before being transported to the Spartanburg County Detention Center.
Jones has been charged with four counts of assault of battery with intent to kill, one count of failure to stop for blue lights and siren, one count of possession of a weapon during a violent crime, one count of pointing and presenting a firearm, one count of receiving stolen goods more than $5,000 and one count of receiving stolen goods less than $1,000.
