The world's number one golfer, Tiger Woods, suffered injuries in an automobile accident today. The 33-year-old was taken to a hospital near Orlando.
A local police chief in Florida says Tiger Woods' wife used a golf club to smash out the back window and helped get the golfer out of the car.
Windermere Police Chief Daniel Saylor told The Associated Press on Friday that Elin Nordegren told officers she was in the house when she heard the accident and came outside. Saylor says officers found Woods laying in the street with his wife hovering over him.
Police say Woods hit a fire hydrant and part of a tree early Friday. Saylor says Woods was in and out of consciousness when his officers arrived. Saylor says Woods had cuts on his lips and blood in his mouth. He says his officers gave him first aid until fire rescue came about 10 minutes later.
Woods was taken to Health Central hospital near Orlando, reportedly with cuts to his face after a car accident. Woods was treated and released in good condition.
The Florida Highway Patrol says Woods hit the fire hydrant and tree as he was pulling out of the driveway of his Florida mansion early Friday morning in his 2009 Cadillac S-U-V. The crash is still under investigation and charges are pending, but authorities say it was not alcohol-related. No one else was in the S-U-V at the time of the accident.
Tiger Woods is both the world's number one golfer and one of the richest athletes a leading force in sports marketing and the biggest draw on the P-G-A tour. He's won 14-majors and more than80-tournaments around the world. Just last week, he won the Australian Masters and is scheduled to host a tournament near Los Angeles on Monday. Despite not winning a major title this year, Woods still made a triumphant comeback after sitting out most of 2008 following reconstructive surgery on his knee.
Woods lives in a two-and-a-half million dollar mansion near Orlando with his wife, two-year-old daughter and nine-month-old son.
